Many success stories begin with privilege. Narendra Thakrar’s begins with nothing. Orphaned in Malawi, wandering in the streets with empty pockets and no guiding hand, his early life was a test of survival. Yet, out of this hardship emerged a man whose resolve, humility and gratitude would one day make him not just a successful entrepreneur in Britain, but also a pillar of its Gujarati community. His journey is as much about personal triumph as it is about honouring the community that once sheltered him.

From Malawi’s Streets to London’s Skyline: In 1975, at just 28, Thakrar left Africa for Britain, carrying little more than hope for his children’s future. It was the Indian community in Britain that gave him his first support -- a kindness that left a lifelong imprint. “The community nurtured me when I had nothing. Now that I can, I give back with all my heart,” he says with characteristic candour.

The Business Builder: His entrepreneurial path was anything but instant. He began with a jewellery venture, shifted into importing handicrafts, tried his hand at printing T-shirts and sweatshirts, before striking gold in souvenirs. From those humble beginnings grew Awnhill Limited, now among the UK’s most prominent souvenir distributors.

Awnhill’s network spans museums, heritage sites, hotels, airports and tourist destinations across the country. In 2012, it achieved a unique milestone -- becoming the only Asian-owned company licensed to supply souvenirs for the London Olympics. Through every phase, Thakrar’s philosophy was consistent: build steadily, avoid overreach, and remain self-reliant. “Don’t take favours. Be in a position to help others, not the other way around,” he says.

Community, the Real Anchor: If business established his credentials, service cemented his legacy. Narendra Thakrar’s leadership extended far beyond boardrooms. He served as President of the Lohana community in North London, founded the Malawi Hindu Association (UK), and for over 15 years has been patron of the ISKCON Temple in Watford.

Most prominently, he serves as Executive Chairman of Shri Vallabh Nidhi UK, custodian of the grand Shri Vallabh Nidhi Temple in Wembley. Taking charge at a difficult time, he helped secure the temple’s future and strengthened its role as a cultural and spiritual landmark for the diaspora.

Family, Faith and Fortitude: Now in his late sixties, Thakrar defies the usual notions of retirement. While his younger son Hiten manages Awnhill and his elder son practises medicine, he continues to stay actively involved in both business and community service. A proud grandfather, he gives credit to his wife for being the backbone of his family’s success.
